As a control systems engineer (1979 graduate), I can view the prince-II lifecycle principles of P-D-C-A as a closed-loop feedback control system where the actual output of the system is monitored and compare the planned objectives and the deviations used to trigger some corrective actions to fix such deviations.

ITIL is conceptually based on the Deming/Shrewhart cycle of Plan-Do-Check-Act. My organization has modified Deming to a standard set of lifecycle phases: Plan-Build-Implement-Assess.
