Hi all,
I am currently a 3rd line tech who has come up through the ranks from 1st to 2nd to 3rd line etc. I have over seven years doing IT related technical configuration.
I am however getting bored of the technical side of it (it never seems to stop) and was wondering if the ITIL qualification could help me transition to an IT managerial role.

Also what books do you need to take the foundation exam. I notice there are 8 core books but no one actually says which ones to read for which exam.

For the foundation course I would expect trainers to provide the requisite materials (mine did).

Of course we are global here, so I can't know what training companies are doing everywhere. I'd make sure to ask them whether sufficient materials are included.

Also, most foundation courses are short and designed for you to go straight off the training into the test. In that situation the classes are the material. And of course it is in the trainer's interests to have high success rates, so they do try hard to ensure the trainign sessions are enough to get you through the exam.

WRT to books, there is also a book called "IT Service Management: An Introduction" which is published by the IT Serviced Management Forum. This is a smaller single book that accurately condenses the Key ITIL books. Certainly comprehensive enough for the foundation level.

It is cheaper, by a long shot. The ITSMF has web sites all over the place - they have chapters in 15 different countries I think. The web sites will have info on where to get the book.

Zapec,
The foundation course is just an overview really, you will not need to read the full ITIL Books. You can buy the foundation course on Home Study CD's from Amazon for about 200, or you can get the overview book (known as little ITIL) for about 10.00. Little ITIL MAY enough for you to take the Foundation exam but I would think that once you read it you would want talk it over with someone to gain a fuller understanding.
