Hi all,
I'm in charge of optimizing our Hardware (Client PCs) lifecycle process.
Currently the process is pretty much manual work (manual registration of new laptop PCs in an Access DC and giving it out to the users.)
I wonder if anybody has some experience in this area and can point me in the right direction how to optimize this mess.
I'm thinking of things like:
- getting barcodes with the hardware from our vendors to automatically scan it in our stocks.
I'm particularly interessted how you handle situations like: assume the laptop was given to the user but the user was promoted to a new position or even leaves the company - how do you handle this updates on the hardware side?

Andy,
LinkedIN
OK Now that I solved taht issue back to yours
you need to do several things in order to establish control over the assets
1 - invest in a barcode reader and tape machine. This should be done when the h/w arrives. to add it to the 'database'
2 - there are key data that can be provided by the vendor (manufacturer od the item), vendor (wholesale/ retail) that you buy the kit from
I wrote a paper about how to set this up
You need at least 2 key ID fields
The barcode ID for the equipement, the S/N on the equipment, and an record ID for the entry. If there is a NIC card, get the MAC and add this as key ID
The record ID is linked to the person ID - who should be controled via H/R
Then assocaiate the person to the device
In addition, what a lot of companies do is rebuild to their specificiation and add the device to the domain and check it is there periodically
Getting all this data detail will do the following
get the PC/Laptop / PDA into the system (delivered to the company)
Processed into the system ( IT build)
assigned to an individual
and also creates the reverse _________________ John Hardesty
