hello there, i've done something pretty stupid and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice:
i've got a v2 foundation certificate and v2 practitioner certificates in change and problem mgt. i want to go for the ITIL Expert certification this year by getting the v2 manager's certificate and then doing the v3 manager's bridge as this would be cheapest option for me (i'm paying for all of this out of my own pocket). to that end i bought all the of the books in january.
after a month of working through them it's only just occurred to me that i've bought the v3 books, not v2. given that i design & work within ITIL processes every day at work, do you think this is going to make a huge impact on my preparation for the v2 manager's certification? are there enormous differences in terminology etc that will cost me marks?

One of things that you failed to note is that you can only get the ITIL Service Manager Certificate for V2 if you attend the 2 week course
This is mandatory as EXIN and ISEB will not accept candidates that do not take the 2 week course.
This has been repeated in several threads in this forum and
So you have 2 options
1 - keep the v3 books. This is a given
2 - take the 2 week course for v2 manager's certificate. You get the books as part of the course material
3 - go the full v3 route..
If not 2, then 3#

My advice is to put the v3 books to one side and forget about them.
The V2 managers course, is designed to prepare you for the exam by teaching you what you need to know to pass the exam, without forcing you to learn the entire of both books, which would be impossible.

This is the first time I heard about getting v2 books as part of the Service Manager course. UKV, are you sure? Maybe in Jurope they do. As far as I know here in NA you have to have the books and bring them with you.
I'm in the US. I received the SS, SD, and Security books with my Service Managers' course. I'm sure the fee included the full retail value of the books. Ask your provider.
You might try to borrow the SD and SS during the course. Our instructor gave us reading assignments, such as read sections 7.1 through 7.5.1; 7.5.3 through 7.5.6, etc. Other than that, we used his materials.
That said, I've used the SS and SD books (the Security one, not so much) quite a bit since. Your V3 books will serve that purpose though. _________________ Ruth Mason

To clarify (as the director of an accredited training company, and a V2 Manager's Examiner)
1. You DO need to attend the courses. You cannot put yourself forward for the exam, it has to be done by an accredted traing company
2.You only need SS and SD books, but you need to know them well
3. Good training companies will always provide the books as part of the course - if they do not, then I would be very wary - and realise that that is why their course looks cheaper
4 You need to get registered for one of the few remainin g managers courses before they are withdrawn, which is soon

I think Pink Elephant qualify as a "good" training provider yet they don't cover the books
"The tuition fee covers the following:
* Course materials – workbook and CD (not including ITIL’s Service Delivery and Service Support books – see below)
* Two classroom sessions instructed a fully certified IT management consultants
* Personal coaching sessions with instructor
* Two exams "
Same was for HP and another local provider here in Calgary. It was assumed you had the books.
Me thinks they assume that since you are going for the Manager's certification you should have read the books in the past and used them in your work. Hence, you should have them
It is not just a question of being good - training companies buy in bulk and get a duscount, then sell them on at full price! My point really was to check if books are included if comparing prices. When I say SS and SD I mean Service Support (not Strategy) and Service Delivery - the read and blue books.
If you get hold of Planning to Implement, that would help as well, as many questyions are about implementation, but this is not officially a required book
Tutorss MUST be accredited, as must be the traing company.
It used to be mandatory to have 2 tutors for at least 60% of the time - it is not any longer, and makes the course more expensive to run, but is much better for the students - a change of pace, anew perspective, and someone to mark and give feedback on your mock exams whilst the other one is teaching. If you have only one tutor, they will be doing this in the evening, which will inevitably not be as thorough. So ask if there will be 2 tutors, and how many mock questions you will do - is there a full 3 hour mock exam as well? _________________ Liz Gallacher,

Just keep those books, they will come in handy after you take your manager's bridge exam, a good reference.
As for training providers, most providers do provide the books as other mentioned. Also this is the perfect chance to take the the ITIL V2 managers as the prices are much cheaper than they were before.
I still dont understand how you got v2 foundation and practitioner certificates and managed to purchase the wrong books, you need to review the process mate. _________________ Ali Makahleh
