Hi there,

The company I'm interning for has 5 people in the IS department to support roughly 400 people. I don't think they have been trained with ITIL best practices, but for an organization with 400 people, is ITIL valuable?

We design and manufacture navigation products.

Does the IT team deliver a service to the other 395 people ?
Are there desktops, mail servers, print servers, file servers that have to be managed ?

IT Service Management is IT Service Management

ITIL is a best practice guide

You can do IT SM with 1 person or 1000 staff

Have tyhe IT Departyment write good policy, process and procedure documents for what they do

That is half the battle

Yes, there are desktops, laptops, servers, and printers that need to be managed. These 5 people support a call center (in a separate building 5 minutes away) and the main building which consists of manufacturing and software development for the navigation products.

So when does an IT manager know that it is the right time to adopt ITIL practices? The IT staff is pretty old-school and approaching retirement, so they sort of work in their silos...
