Posted: Thu Sep 06, 2012 6:54 pm Post subject: Keep failing my OSA exam
Hi guys,
I'm feeling really down right now, I've taken the OSA exam twice now and have failed both times.
I seem to be really struggling with the style of questions, that and obviously my knowledge of the subject must be rubbish.
So what I want to know is, are there others in the same boat?
Does anyone have any recommended reading that may help me understand the concepts better? Or even how to analyse the questions better?
The Intermediate level exams are difficult papers and students often have to sit an exam a couple of times.
I would advise you in general to review your answers to identify your weaker areas and cover these areas in the course materials again, and re-do the sample questions that cover these areas.
I would strongly recommend reviewing the Service Operation publication if you have it
Remember that the scenario-based questions can be more challenging than the quiz questions you had in the Foundation. Quiz questions check knowledge, scenario questions check whether you can apply that knowledge. Reading the scenarios very carefully is critical. That sounds obvious, but it is surprising how often students do not read every word.Reviewing each scenario carefully and identifying key points, then reviewing each answer option and highlighting 'positive' and 'negative' statements is the approach I usually recommend. Be very wary of any answers which take a purely technical approach, downplaying the importance of people and processes. Note any comments about the business perspective - if the business is expanding rapidly, or cost-cutting and downsizing, the appropriate response would take account of this.
Remember the examiners expect you to show a management point of view.
Remember when completing your exam that the option you choose should answer the following questions:
Is it 'good ITIL'?
Does it answer the question?
Does it fit the scenario?
Is it management rather than technically focussed?
The most common reasons for not getting the 5 mark answer are because the candidate does not ensure that all three of these conditions are met.
If you have the time, I recommend buying the following book. it costs about £30 GBP, and is available from Amazon and other bookshops

Thanks for your responses, some really useful tips there, I'm awaiting my course tutor to get back to me.
I think exam technique is something I need to work on, and will definitely look at your book recommendation Liz, and also take on board your tips, so thanks for that.
