Hello All,
I'm brand new to the whole ITIL/ITSM world. I'm very excited about the opporunity to get in on this while still in its infancy here in the US.
Now to my question - I've noticed that a new version of ITIL will be coming out some time this year. Is it worth it to buy the current books or should I wait until the new ones come out?
Thank you.

Welcome to the small, but growing band of US ITILers. If you've just gotten your foundation, and are going to be heavely involved in implementation or ITIL work, I would recommend bitting the bullet and buying the Service Support and Service Delivery books. Yep, they can go on the shelf in a year or two, but you need the information now!
You are correct, in the US, ITIL is just beginning to take off. Heck, I got my Foundation in 1999, and was a voice crying in the wilderness. I got my red badge two years ago, and most people said, "that's nice, what is it?" For once it is nice to be ahead of the power curve |

Get the books..
I find myself looking at the books a lot..
This way you don't get lost in the variant wars.
The books have the value of "pure truth"

| A year is a long time when it comes to learning. I'd certainly recommend buying the books and getting to grips with the material now. Not exactly light reading - but good reference material. |

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. As a follow-up to this question, which books should I get? At this point, my primary interest is in the Service Desk domain. I see there is Service Support, Service Delivery, Planning to Implement Service Management. Do I need all three?
Thanks.

Buy all three if you can - at the very least get Service Support and Planning to Implement.
I find them invaluable (We have the Support & Delivery books on CD) - more expensive, but then you can install them where they can be seen by everyone.

| That reminds me, I need to pick up the Planning to Implement as soon as we're over all the financial year stuff. |

| ITIL v3 is expected sometime in September of 2006. The books are great reference anyway. Even the much older individual books from v1 can be helpful from a concept point of view. |
