Info on ITIL Foundation

Hi All,

I have been following this site for the last week or so and I've found it quite interesting so today I have decided to put my first question.

I have decided to take the ITIL exem at foundation level and I was wondering if studying the ITIL Service Delivery and the ITIL Service Support I will cover all the areas of the foundation exam.

I am already PRINCE2 qualifeied so I will ask you if I will find any similarity between those 2 qualifications or they will be well different one of each others.

Hello Michele,

Studying the Service Support and Service delivery would be good enough for the ITIL Foundation exam, though I have heard that one or two questions pertaining to the Security management also appears in the exam.

Importantly - Knowing the key terminologies, understanding the inter-relationships between processes is extremely important for the exam.

Hi Arnoldmram,

I have start to read the books yesterday and I found few similarities with the PRINCE2 in regard of the terminologies and the processes.

I think that in a couple of weeks I should be able to give the exam at foundation level.

I have also worked on a Helpdesk a while ago but some of the experience I have gained over there is now comin up again.

I hope it all works at the ned.

Also can you please adviseme of the other book ?

Becasue I have the Blue and the Red on Cd Rom but seems to me the other one is not appearing at all.

I have just been reading the course material again from my Foundation Course & Exam - This was taken in the UK in 2003.

The Contents make interesting reading

Implementation,
Service Desk,
Incident Management,
Configuration Management,
Change Management,
Release Management,
Service Level Management,
Financial Management for IT Services,
Capacity Management,
IT Service Continuity Management, and
Availability Management.

No suprises except that no Security Management at all, and some people have seen Security questions on their paper.

One of the biggest things for me was to soak up the acronyms (provided on the CDs) used within ITIL.

The book Arnold is referring to is
Security Management Book
Published: 20th April 1999
ISBN: 011330014X
Price is around £45 from online bookshops

Can i just add that when I did my foundation course & exam 5 years ago, I did it on line with a training organisation in Australia. As I had no ITIL experience at the time, I found it more difficult to do the exam because I hadn't attended a course. A foundations course should allow you to leverage off the trainer and other participants' experiences which you can not get out of the books. Just my 2 cents. But I also know that money does play a big part in this decision.

Thanks for all the info.

But as you mentioned before the money is playing a big game on this qualification, so I have to study and get it wothout a course.

I may get a course for the practitioner exam.

Beside the foundation exam what else do you need to pass the practitioner exam ?

Is a course mandatory or not ?

Do you need any particular work experience ?

Foundation Course is mandatory for Practitioners. They will ask you for your certificate no when you apply for your Practictioners.

I know from looking, that E-Courses exist at Foundation, but all the Practitioner courses I have seen are attended courses. The exams I took in the UK consists of two parts, one assignment based on day 2 afternoon which is written answers and secondly on day 3 afternoon a multiple choice extenally invigilated exam - both of 1 Hour each.

people have talked about exams that are done online, but again these appear to be Foundation only.

You may have already pressed forward with the Exam, but if you have budget constraints, but still want ITIL Foundations training, there are on-line courses available for about USD$499? If you want more information, let me know. There are no online Practitioner-level courses available. Good luck with your studies!

Can I ask the reason why you wish to take a Practitioners Course/exam after Foundations? These are specialised courses for specific process managers roles. Are you filling or about to fill this type of role? IF not then you need to ask why you want to do this type of course - obviously I don't understand your situation or career path......so I am speculating.

YEs, that is right - there are on-line courses available for the Foundations course that last about 16 hours... and a test which is online as well. What I'm wondering is... since the Practitioner's certification exams are changing, which path would be best persued to get a Master's Cert... Can anyone give me some insite here?

Also, which online course is best for Foundations? Thanks in advance for sharing your experience!

Bit of clarification for us across the pond - by Masters do you mean the 'Manager's Certificate in IT Service Management' or do you mean a 'Master's Degree' from a University? A lot of people seem to get confused with the terminology.

The OGC (Office of Government Commerce) have a PDF file on their itil.co.uk website aimed at anyone wishing to become an accredited trainer

Look for the Training Information link

Then look for the link to the ITIL Qualification Scheme.

sections 1, 2, and 7 apply for organisations wanting to become accredited trainers.
