ITIL neophyte here -- with some odd (to me) questions. I'm looking to better understand how to codify Releases. My confusion relates to "layered" Releases and Versioning.
For example:
I have a Full Release: Windows OS
I have a Delta Release : Windows Patch KBxxx
I have another Delta Release : Windows Patch KBxxx
Do any of these require a version?
I take these releases, and combine them into a single Package Release : Windows OS Image
Does this Release require a version?
I take the above Package Release, combine it with five other various releases to form a single collection of releases that will define my "Windows Build Image". This might have Office, WinZip, etc...
Is this a Package Release, or a Full Release?
Does it require a version?
Again, forgive me if the question seems a bit off-base. More than happy to get any feedback I can.

Hi,
I think you need to set up the scope for your release and decide what kind of change should have a version numbering.
In my company we do version numbering on Full, Packed and Delta release. We do not have version numbering on Emergancy changes.
Full release is when every user affects in a big way, as when you change operating system, Office version etc. Then you change the firs number 1.1.1
Packed release is when you have new software or update of software. Change number two 1.1.1.
Delta release is never a new software or update. Only script changes or bugfixes. 1.1.1
i have a Full Release: Windows OS
I have a Delta Release : Windows Patch KBxxx
I have another Delta Release : Windows Patch KBxxx
Do any of these require a version?
Yes all of them would need a version as they are major & minor changes to your environment
I take these releases, and combine them into a single Package Release : Windows OS Image
Does this Release require a version?
it will be then a full release, major change and yes it will need a version
I take the above Package Release, combine it with five other various releases to form a single collection of releases that will define my "Windows Build Image". This might have Office, WinZip, etc...
Is this a Package Release, or a Full Release?
Does it require a version?
if you combine them, it will be a full release. and it will need a version
