Here's a quick toss to the group, hoping to get some reactions. I know that the ITIL Foundation class is designed to be taught in two days. But how about designing, integrating and expanding Foundations to be taught in a University course in a trimester or a semester. This course, along with advanced courses such as Practitioner and Master's, could be integrated into current C.S. bachelor's and master's courses. This could be a great way to evangelize ITIL into CIS degree holders worldwide. Just a thought!! _________________ audentes fortuna juvat

I agree that a more academic level for IT service Management and a connection to IT Departments in higher education institutes needs to happen.
Carnegie Mellon (contact Majid Iqbal) is the only academic institute that I know in the USA that has made a breakthrough in this area. I have had conversations with Wayne Benz of EXIN concerning this (my own pre-IT background is academia). EXIN has someone working on this (I forget his name).
I believe at least one UK institute offers a PhD in IT Service Management. I think it is also an online degree but requires some travel to UK, which is out of the question for me at this time.
I have been working on my local community college (which is very IT vocationally focused) to integrate IT service management into its curriculum. Not a lot of conversation so far. I will keep working on it.
I would also like to hear from other closest academics...
Michael,
You are indeed correct. I suspect there will be a time when a significant number of IT staff will have to either be skilled or fully understand the 'business governance processes- ITIL' that governs IT. A foundation course online is not in my opinion the best way nor even a three day class. Academia, unfortunately follows industry by some years- I suspect it will be another two before your college takes you seriously.
In the mean time there are many executives sitting in corner offices saying 'I know this stuff is great and will be great for the bottom line- now how the hell do I get from here to there?'

This has been very interesting so far. I'll keep on doing research. Thing is that for this to work it has to be adopted by big name colleges. I'll keep on checking. _________________ audentes fortuna juvat

Strong support from community. Project ACCESO grew in part from a community-wide visioning process which included input from all college stakeholders. Better access to college services and programs proved to be the strongest mandate of all those discussed concerning the future of IVC.
Sara this is it no more
Project Acceso is a complete suite of distance course delivery modes and student services. Beyond having access to distance learning, IVC students will also benefit from online assessment, online registration, online degree audit, online enrollment, and online advising. These innovative services are greatly needed for our large service area and fast-growing population.
Enthusiasm on campus. Many teachers have expressed interest in taking part in the distance education programs. Project ACCESO is seen as part of a wave of recent college improvements that include passage of the bond measure for a new science/technology building, recent implementation of the Banner student administration system, increased hiring, and higher wages.
