I see that HP is marketing an 'Active CMDB', based on XML. It's adapted from the Peregrine and HP Service Desk CMDBs, as far as I can see.
It looks as if it is designed for distributed CMDBs and appears to offer some open connections.
Has anybody here used it?
Are the XML definitions available anywhere? It just seems to me that, if it is going to have good connectivity, then these would need to be documented openly and freely!

Active CMDB. "Active CMDB" term is used to describe the HP's solution to delivering dynamic configuration management, change control, and process integration across the HP OpenView portfolio and beyond. The Active CMDB is not a stand-alone product. It is embedded within the products. It will allow you to:
- Define and model CI's, services, and relationships
- Reconcile multiple data sources
- Synchronize data
- Perform data state management
- Visualize the physical relationship across the infrastructure
- Support a federated implementation through the use of web services
HP OpenView products that support the Active CMDB are: Service Desk/ServiceCenter, AssetCenter, Enterprise Discovery, Radia, OVO, and NNM.

Yes, I've seen that from the marketing stuff.
The interesting point is that it claims to be an Enterprise wide CMDB that can integrate as you say 'beyond'. This is done through XML.
In order to understand the integration, it'd be useful to have a list of the XML definitions that are being, or going to be, used.
Ideally, there'd be an industry wide standard for representing CMDB objects, including their actions and the workflow. If HP keeps it secret then they'll only have produced yet another proprietory thing - not much to be excited about.

There is a working group looking at a interoperability spec for CMDBs....vendors like BMC, HP, IBM, CA, etc. are on it. Not sure what their timeframe is...
there is a HP Forum, and you can choose there what your interest areas are, and I'm sure that Active CMDB is something they would have a thread about, probably you'd receive some additional feedback from there.
