I have read a few articles regarding CI`s and the numbering of them. However I dont really understand the best way to go about numbering our CI`s. Is it just a simple step of starting at the top with 1 and drilling down each item, or is there an more structured approach?
What do you mean by numbering?
If you mean assigning a unique ID to each CI, well it can be as simple as just numbering them in sequence to avoid duplication. But it is more convenient and practical to have a combination of names and numbers for CI UIDs. For example Dell Laptops can be identified by DELL/LP/1, DELL/LP/2 and so on. Dell servers can be DELL/SRV/1, DELL/SRV/2,... Dell workstations can be DELL/WS/1, DELL/WS/2,...
I hope I understood your request and answered clearly.

In addtion, consider the numbering of the IT Assets in a Data Center.
Every IT should have a unique Asset Tag - either related wholely to the data center - if each DC has their own range - or a corporate wide Asset tag numbering
I think the numbering of CIs could be record ID in a database table - unique or for example if you have a Sun e250 server as a unique CI......if you have 50 Sun e250s etc _________________ John Hardesty

you may also want to apply a naming convention to your CIs, part of which could be a prefix, based on the CI types, for example SRV.<serverame> for servers, etc.
