Open-source CMDB software

[Escape-K]

Hi,

I'm the project leader of a nearly new project, Escape-K, whose goal is to provide an open-source CMDB implementation. Currently only early-unstable-incomplete-snaphsots versions of this software are available.

As it seems to be some CMDB specialists here, I would like to ask for some help in :

• Design
  
• Features suggestions (wish list)
  
• Documentation writer

Hi Nicolas,

When we started the Configurattion Management project we were looking for a similar kind of tool. And we found something called as "OneCMDB". You can try the same at onecmdb dot org.

We are still in the testing phase and trying to implement as per our nature of work. You can try it out and check if it suits your needs.

If you get to know of any other / better alternative please do let us know too.

I'm currently wondering what is the best way to manage CI class model. For now i can see two possibilities:

• Hard-coded model: That means that CI class are hard-coded Java objects. Users have to manage with these classes, but developers can extend the model by using APIs and by providing new class model. The advantage I see is that UI can provides a very rich interface for CI configuration. The drawback is that it needs a very complete model.
  
• Soft-coded model: with this solution the CI class definitions are stored. New class can be easily created by administrators from the UI. Drawbacks is that CI forms will have standards layout and may be poor control on input fields.
  

So my question is , what do you want from a CMDB software concerning CI class model ? should it provide a full set of pre-defined class and ask for development if your need more classes, or should it provide a way to control this model and more properties, setup class, ...?

I guess, everyone will prefer second choice, but it's also the hardest to implement. So , tell me.
