Hello mvanwyk,
It really depends on what the expectations are of the people that assigned it to you. However, I've seen such plans that involve all of the following. Here are some things to consider...
- Facilities Inventory and Assessment
- Availability & Capacity Assessment (Facilities, Power, Cooling, Racks, etc.)
- Asset Inventory Establishment and Maintenance
- Asset Inventory Purpose Categorization
- Configuration Management Plan
- Technology Roadmaps
- Infrastructure Refresh Roadmaps
- Resource Management Plan
- Resource Pool Categorizations
- Infrastructure Resource Labor Cost Breakdown
- Business Chargeback Model
- Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Plan
- Year-Over-Year (YOY) Projected Spend Plan (Usually two to three years out)
I'm sure I've missed some things but this should give you a start.
Best Regards,

Oh, and I forgot the following:
- A Vendor Inventory
- A General Contract Inventory and Assessment
- A Software License Inventory and Assessment
- A Plan Of Work (A two to three year Project Plan, with things like dates being far more specific in the short term and very vague in the longer term.)
Regards,

Mark,
There are generally three different ways to start an ITIL Implementation. Which is most effective is largely dependant on your organization, and frankly you.
1) Pick the pain point. For example, you are getting killed by unauthorized changes. Implement Change Management first. even with out a CMDB you will gain value by reducing the number of failed changes.
2) Pick the best. You already have a Change Board, but don’t operate to the ITIL framework. Take CM and enhance it to meet the ITIL framework, implement Release Mangement, then perhaps Incident. - least pain of change, but also low impact.
3) Do them all. Personally I think this is suicide, but with enough staff and money, it CAN work. Be prepared to HUGE pushback due to the changes you will be making to the organization.
I like #1 best, shows quick benefit to the organization. But be careful that you don’t forget that the most important part of ITIL is not the individual functions, but the communication between them (IMHO).
But, as has been said before....Just Do IT.
(oh, be sure to get someone to train your organization. Training turns nay sayers into advocates and advocates into zealots.)
Good Luck! _________________ Douglas Anderson
