Yet again i see the mixed messages around the term "ITIL Compliancy" and seemingly where it derived from with ISO20000. In our local LIg we've had the discussion about where we've heard it and how compliancy just isn't an official term. Just going to paste from the email for the itsmf usa for their keynote track for fusion 07.

Its unforunate that mixed messages like this make it a bit difficult to deliver a consistent message..

so far, I have only read or heard about "ITIL compliant" from vendors trying to sell something .... No ITIL authority has ever defined what being ITIL compliant would be, so , to me , it just does not exist (although that would help a lot)

The reference to ITIL compliance by itSMF (above) and the comments attributed to Dr. Dugmore – see the thread ‘ITIL Compliance’ – lead one to the conclusion that the itSMF do accept that there is ITIL compliance, but only through ISO20000. In other words if you have implemented all your ITIL processes, you may still not claim to be ITIL compliant, but by achieving ISO 20000, you may. Even though, as LizGallacher has pointed out, the ISO standard does not mention the Service Desk which many consider to be the heart of ITIL.
This is bad news for ITIL consultants. Many companies are customer driven in that Quality certification is a requirement laid down by their customers when choosing suppliers, partners or service providers. Who would invest in ITIL, when at the end of the process you still do not have a Quality certificate to boast about? Better to go for ISO 20000 and get ITIL compliance along with it.
Fans of the IT Skeptic will not be surprised to hear that the mysterious one has already covered this on his website in an article entitled ‘Is ITIL dead in The Water?’
I vote ‘Yes’.
