Hello everybody

I'm starting to study ITIL docs, trying to fix the limits of this framework.

I've not read very much, but I think that the framework is big enough to support, Help desk service, incident mgmt, problem mgmt, and almost the whole bunch of services that our IT department deal with.

But I'm not sure about where change management, and release management start.

Can I manage the business needs under ITIL?

My process starts with a business need, that I have to identify and translate it into a requirements doc. After that, I want to use the change management, in order to fix the impact of the requirement. And I'm talking about impact with business scope.

I'm not talking about impacts on IT items that are related to business process, I'm talking about identify the impact of a functional change over the current business process.

Is anyone using ITIL as framework for this process??

Absolutely. You might want to read the Planning to Implement, Business Perspective and Application Management books. They have sections or deal completely with the question you have.

If you look at ITIL as being greater than the sum of the ten core disciplines, you cannot exclude business needs or requirements from falling under the umbrella of the IT Service Management framework. Service Planning, Service Design and Service Level Management is how we refer to the three processes that work together to align IT to the business.

Service Level Requirements in our organization are just decomposed or more granular aspects of business requirements. If you apply functional decomposition techniques to those business requirements, you will eventually drill down to the level of granularity manageable within change management.

Check out the books I mentioned. I think it will be enlightening.
