Hi,

I am writing a seminar paper at the University of Technology in Munich about ITIl. Our focus lies on problems and challenges of ITIL. It would be great if you could help me and give me advice concerning the following

* What are the main challenges of ITIL?
* Are there any problems (during implementation phase, while ITIL is running)?
* Is ITIL up-to-date?
* What about costs/benefits?

Many thanks in advance!

Short and sweet answers:

1.) A main challenge of ITIL is that implementation requires a complete restructuring of many of the daily processes that an IT division uses. This will be near impossible if you do not have complete support from the most seniro levels of management. Another main challenge is that this is a huge endevor and takes years to complete. you just can't go by a ticket tracking tool, install it and call it complete.

2.) Problems during implementation? Read this forum and you will fund hundreds. They just depend on your organizational structure, size, budget and willingness of the staff to embrace the changes

3.) ITIL has completed an update as of '06. It has been adopted as an ISO standard. While the whole of ITIL has been around for a number of years, the current version is quite apropos to today's businesses.

4.) cost/Benefit analysis is a term paper in itself. The bottom line is it will consume a significant amount of your resources but if done correctly will pay off in a manner that will bring benefits to your corporation.

Now, if you haven't missed the deadline for your paper, these four headings plus about 1000 words aught to get you in the ball park.

Good Luck!

Hi,

Take a look at my recent past posts and you'll find a list of the challenges of ITIL implementation including reference to a presentation you can download as someone else asked the question recently.

In addition to no. 3 on Davest's response, ITIL is currently undergoing a v3 refresh. Details such as the scoping document and revised glossary are available for download from the itSMF website (click here).

In addition to no. 4 there is a recent paper that Robin Yearsley published on his Service Management blog (click here) that looked at cost / benefit analysis for ITIL implementations, so have a search over there.

Have fun and good luck with the paper.
