What m_croon says is correct. But knowing whether you have both a CMDB and an Asset DB may make sense at this point. You could potentially use your CMDB for asset mgt, which would simplify your classification. Otherwise, you should have a link between the 2 systems and store the information where it belongs.

I absolutely agree. I interpreted the original question as regarding documents instead of a db system. When talking about a db system, I am in favour of either one system or at least an automated interface between 2 systems. In that case, all you should do is determine on db-atribute level who is owner, config. manager or fin. controler.
