Surprised myself today

I was going through some old CV/application - especially the US Government one which wanted every job I every had since 1979 and I realized.

I must have being one of the first Change/Configuration Management types on the internet. And that was 20+ years ago.

My first adult job was Network Configuration Manager for ARPAnet from 1984-87. Actually, I worked for BBN Communications and while I was there, ARPAnet split into ARPA and MIL net. I eventually managed the pacific part of MIL/ARPA.

Damn I feel old.

300 baud modems, 9.6 kb trunks. a few 56 Kbs tunks. X.25, VDH, HDLC.

Packet Switching Nodes.

I started in Operations in 1973 when IBM 360 Mainframes were the kiddies to run and end-of-block meant a key on the console to press to indicate the end of the current block of data. Data was fed in by punched cards or paper tape. We had 64 meg of ram and disk drives that looked like washing machines only bigger, with removable disks that had 9 platters on a spindle.

You are only a baby yet

We had dumb terminals connected by co-ax cable to the controllers controlled by a five and a quarter inch floppy disk in a paper envelope. We actually had someone who folded the floppy disk in half and then could not understand why the controller would not work.

Tape drives were as big as a wardrobe with 3600 foot reel to reel tapes
