We are just importing some data into our CMDb regarding our software applications. Do people think its worth putting in items which are new no longer used or not valid eg Freeware? If so why?

Ask yourself the following questions
Why is the software on the systems ?
Do they require licenses
Are they supported
Are they allowed on the machines
Are your tracking what software is installed on clients machine
If the software is in the CMDB, then it should be authorized software only.
Thereby only allowing Service support calls on authorized CIs, one of the benefits of a CMDB in supporting incident mgmt _________________ John Hardesty

Hello Matt,
Fundamentally, your CMDB starts with an inventory of everything that impacts and composes your existing environment and then, ultimately, addresses how everything is composed and snapshots of composition, based on As Of/As On dates.
If the items in question have to do with the composition of anything that's in your environment, today, then you have to decide whether having such information is important for your enterprise. I, personally, would ensure that such things get in, on the assumption that they're tied in some way, shape, or form to other things that are running in my environment. If they're not, then I'm sure there are more important things to go after.
My Best,
