Hi,
I'm a Groupware/messaging systems specialist with 10 years of IT experience with a large company. Because we use ITIL or our variation of it regularly for problem, change, and configuration management, I've become used to the terms and practices.
I'm interested in ITIL certification and I have the following questions:
> I know ITIL Foundation certification will enhance my current resume, but will my experience along with the Foundation certification attract employers who need ITIL process managers/team leads/consultants/architects?
> Assuming I take and pass my ITIL Foundations test, will I be blocked from taking further certification classes and tests (Practioner) because I'm not technically considered a "Manager" in IT? I've lead projects here and there and have plenty of customer face time, but I'm not management, I'm a techie.
> What is the job market like for ITIL professionals? What are the salary ranges?
I know this is a lot but if someone who knows could take the time to answer I'd really appreciate it.

Yes, organizations who are on the ITIL bandwagon will almost always look at someone with ITIL Foundation certification over someone who doesn't, all other things being equal (which they never are). This is usually just a practical consideration of having to send someone who isn't Foundation certified to a training class before they can begin assimilating with the organization's mindset.

The Practitioner courses are, for the most part, designed for the techies, so no worries there. The Service Manager course is designed for IT Management, but most training organizations will let you take the course if you have had sufficient IT and project management experience. I took the Service Manager course having never had any managerial (direct reports) experience. I had been in IT for 20 years and had a laundry list of project management experience. I too am a techie (although now I am a manager with 19 direct reports).

That depends. There are not a lot of jobs specifically for ITIL professionals. There are a few for Incident/Problem/Change Managers, but mostly the job market is for the same type positions there have always been for IT, just with the preference for people with an understanding of Best Practices.
