For those of you whose companies have implemented successful CMDB's, what software did you use to accomplish this? Also, what industry are you in and what is the approximate size of your company? Thank you for your help!
[NOTE: I am not interested in any home-grown approaches ~ we've tried this method and it never took off.]

Before answering, I'd like to disclose, up front, that I run a vendor enterprise that provides ITIL tool solutions.
I don't know if this helps but we offer an On-Demand ITIL Platform that treats a CMDB a very different way than other vendor CMDBs. Traditionally, other CMDBs are "separate applications" that you have to integrate your data sources to. These CMDBs tend to focus strictly on infrastructure. Our platform does not include a "separate CMDB". It "is" the CMDB. All CIs across all functional disciplines of your enterprise are both inventoried and worked on, right in the platform. As a result, anything can be appropriately tied to anything else, both, implicitly and explicitly. The positive side effect is that there are fewer applications to install, manage, and integrate. Also, the cost is a fraction of the price of what it would take to traditionally roll out a solution.
We've implemented for enterprises of all sizes in many different industries, because the concept is truly generic and exists to help foster cross-market standardization.
I have also implemented other well-known brand CMDBs, as a practitioner, in large financial firms, so I have a great deal of experience with some very well-known solutions.
