I have been running a large Training department in an automotive engineering IT environment. Does anyone have an idea of how and in what capacity, I could transfer my skills to an ITIL position?

I would think you could easily transfer into one of two positions. The first would be establishing a training curriculum for the ITIL processes and certification courses. The other area that requires good training/teaching/mentoring skills is Service Level Management. Those skills are especially needed when doing service planning or design. You effectively have to work as an internal consultant with your business partners. Most of the time you have to work to help educate the business partners on the capabilities of IT. You also need to be good at questionsing and requirements elicitation to help define/design services.
