Do we need to add all desktops allocated to users in CMDB ?

Hi,

I am Itil v3 certified and now i am CMDB Anchor for my location where my offcie is.

I just have small query.In CMDB as of now we have just added all CI placed and installed in DATACENTER/SERVER/HUB ROOMS,

Do we also need to add all desktops allocated to users.We have Asset control managment system where we allocate desktops to users when they are provided to user and using Asst. Cntl system we can track any desktop provided to user.

Please suggest.

Hi,

it depends - if you want to control these items via CMDB and config mngt then yes include them. However from experience it can add a good bit of admin and overhead to include laptops and desktops.

If you have an asset register then maybe look to link this into the CMDB. You still need to account for the assets of a certain value (laptops and desktops should be accounted for) but a lot of org's account for these via asset management and not the CMDB or Config Management.

Some will say that yes they must be recorded as part of Config Mngt - but in reality they should at least be managed assets.

Does your CMDB tool support you adding the desktops

what processes and procedures have been written to manage the installation, moving and adding / removing and changing of the desktops / laptops

who currently is doing the mgmt of the desktops/laptops

what information are you going to keep track of ?
what information is already in the asset register
what information is not

How is the info going to be verified

To add to two posts.

Assets and CIs are normally seen as two different things. While Assets can be a CI, the vice versa might not be true. for practical purposes, the assets for which a change record is raised are maintained in the CMDB. We don't normally raise change orders for Desktops and laptops as they don't normally have dependent CIs.
