Configuration Management - I am interested to know how other members manage virtual servers in their CMDBs. Do you record them simply as virtual servers with a reference to the physical device they reside on ? If a virtual server is moved from one physical server to another automatically how do you track it ? Do you do this via the verification stage of Config Mgt or via Change Management ?

I am not too sure but would think that the virtual servers should be logged in the same way as the other CIs. It depends on how many attributes do we have associated with the CI and we are able to add the relevant information like the relation with other CIs, versioning, snapshots etc, we will make some sense out of the Virtual servers. It could just be important because virtual server in itself might not be anything but will have strong relationship with other CIs. So, if we have a virtual environment unavailable, we can get into the relationship to understand what's the physical thing which could be unavailable. The second part of the question will depend. If the virtual servers are moved to a different physical server, then it should be change management if it satisfies the 7 Rs of change management, otherwise, it could as well be automatically updated (if the system is smart) in the CMDB if the versioning, relationships and snapshots are updated automatically.

Config is a nightmare at the best of times and virtualisation makes it more messy ! Hey ho "cest la vie" as they say in Peckham !!.
