Hi Guys,
What are your thoughts on how projects relate to change control?
I understand that this probably should come under release.
For example, an organisation originates a project to move from one collaboration product to another. Obviously this project will create a significant amount of change requests.
Should project methodology (ie PRINCE) control these changes or should change control?
I have been told by my senior management that putting all project generated work through change control and CAB would be an overly bureaucratic process creating unnecessary work!

A project should be run under PRINCE process / guidelines for the project
PRINCE has its own change control process for changes within the scope of the project
There is project change management as above and there is operational change management
Once a project reach a certain point in its lifecycle, it will cross the threshold from being a project to potentially impacting production
Produciton as defined by the ops CM process
Then it needs to go through change management
Examples
New service is being developed for snr mgmt - blackberry.
You have project plan to build the systems, test, and then enable
where are you building the systems ?
if it is in the data centre under the scope of ops CM, then the addition of servers would trigger Change, configuration processes as there is a direct impact to the rest of environment
where are you testing and how
if the server is 'made' live, then you are using the production network services, and if there is a network cm proces and cab, you get involved with it
when you make it live - is it a big bang or slow release
How are the users to know, how is the service desk to know, how is etc to know
If you have CM process, the CAB is the focal point for risks and impacts to the business - ie production _________________ John Hardesty
