I have basic concerns and some more advanced topics which are areas of confusion. I'll start with the tough question. There seems to be some mudding of concepts around handling projects vs releases vs changes. Any good articles or graphics that explain the similarities and differences? The "problem" we are having is that we are using "change" as a vehicle for projects. We are not using release and deployment. To me a change window should not last days or months even.

My basic concern is I have been reading some documentation that looks at complexity of change. When doing a risk calculation one of the questions asks how long will the change implementation is "lengthy" meaning in some cases greater that the expected time to complete change is 6 or more months. I am suspecting is it not implementation time but rather includes test, build, implementation. However, to me it starts looking more like a project.

Change Management is a broad area. You can have Project CM where there is an approval to start the project. You can have operational CM where the solution - the release - is ready to go to production so the approval is to verified that the solution is ready to go to Production.

These should not be bundled together in one CAB; however the first Approval - approval to develop - would lead to the second

As for Release vs Project, there is NO vs. A release however simple is a project - in simple terms - as it takes people, resources and there is a goal.

From a CM / RM point of view, the Release process should define the requirements that indicate what is the criteria for a success completion of the release or project
