I am designing a CMDB and am wrestling with the concept of a SOR. My organization uses various tools for service desk and asset management. My question is this. Should I designatee a tool like Remedy as a SOR or must I go to the original sourse of the Remedy information?
Nothing wrong with having multiple authorized sources for information and then pointing to them via links in your CMDB.
My preference is to use the original data source for authorized information, howwever if Remedy (in your case) is very tightly coupled with your sources, I see no issue with using it as an authorized source. The trick is to establish what you want to use as an authorized source and then lock it down with solid change control to make sure things don't get corrupted.
If your intention is to have one large massive repository for everything, this may be problematic as an approach. The maintenance and audit effort around this could be very onerous.
