Re: Standard change categories

From experience! Review the ITIL definition of a “standard change” Host a meeting with members of your change advisory board to decide what sort of changes to your IT systems meet the criteria of a “standard change” Update your Change Management policy to reflect what IT changes within your organisa...

Re: Merry Change Freeze To One And All

Best wishes to all for 2019. A change freeze will commence and end as stated in the Change Management policy, in which every organisation will have of course!  Interestingly enough the term “change freeze” isn’t mentioned in ITIL at all and looks to have evolved over the course of time. When I sugg...

Just to add. As stated earlier your Change Management policy will define what constitutes a change as “successful or failure” The criteria needs to be defined. I’ve had a similar experience where an approved change was successfully implemented from an IT perspective (Application Software Update)howe...

Yes you are correct with your understanding. Problem management deals with preventing incidents from occurring with Incident Management being in place to restore an IT service ASAP. From experience when performing an audit of our Datacentre as Configuration Manager, spotting single points of failure...

@Jayachand - What type of CI's are you recording within your CMDB including the attributes please. Emergency changes, in my opinion, should be like Standard Changes with approval given in advance. In fact emergency changes shouldn't even require any detailed information on the change record prior to being implemented. This can be added afterwards. An Emergency Change should only be used to resto...

When I started in Configuration Management, my first task was to check the accuracy of the CMDB. The CMDB that I was managing related to servers to include useful attributes and I did the following. •Performed a physical audit of a number of datacentres •Compared my findings against what was detaile...

It looks like 1 CAB a week is not going to be sufficient to support the business. You could introduce CAB 2 for a Thursday with an RFC submission deadline say at midday on the Wednesday with RFC’s being presented for review on the Thursday. The RFC submission deadline for Tuesdays CAB being Monday a...

The pitfalls could be getting something done when your find a potential problem that could result in an incident. If your organisation doesn’t have SLA’s, presumably there is no rush to resolve incidents which is a tad strange to say the least. Would be interested to see what KPI’s are in place. Fro...

From experience disk space capacity warnings were treated as alerts as a result of a predefined threshold being exceeded. The alert would generate a ticket that would automatically be forwarded to the appropriate support team to act upon in order that the alert doesn’t cause an incident.

Your question could do with a little more information and assuming I have understood it correctly, I would personally identify configuration items that are no longer needed within your CMDB as “decommissioned” The record should not be deleted as this is a way to keep account of all configuration ite...
