The best way to organize a DML on a file share is:

We have a file share for organizing our installation files. Can anyone recommend any best practices for the hierarchy or naming of the folders to store all of the files? Thanks!

For example:

[Organized by Vendor]
Vendor
--Application
----Base Install
----Service Pack 1
----Service Pack 2

or

[Organized by Type]
Server Apps
--Application
----Base Install
----Service Pack 1
----Service Pack 2
Desktop Apps
--Application
----Base Install
----Service Pack 1
----Service Pack 2

or

[Flat]
Application
Application
--Base Install
--Service Pack 1
--Service Pack 2

Hi ericsd

I guess it comes back to the old chestnut of 'It depends'

I would suggest that you look at how you want to acces the information. What is important to you?

Is it the Application Name?

Is it the Vendor?

etc.etc.

And then develop a tree accordingly.

I don't think it matters as long as you can find it. Personally when I think of an software I usually think vendor first. But whatever works for you.

Agree with the above. For having done one recently, I would also respectfully suggests that you at least implement it using a version control tool (Subversion, which is free, would do fine) in order to:

- Have some better access control functionality
- Apply non-destructive updates
- Have some control over check-ins and check-outs

Just a thought...
